Monique Bastos is a strawweight streetfighter in Brazil that holds a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Bastos was walking home with a couple of her friends after being attacked by two robbers.

“I was going to my jiu-jitsu training when they arrived on a motorcycle and said they wanted our phones,” Bastos told “I tried to hold my phone, and I realized they were not armed. When they tried to escape, I lifted the rear wheel of the bike and they fell on the ground. The guy who took my phone ran away, but I was able to get the other one.”

One of the robbers took her phone and ran away, but Bastos was able to subdue the other. She put him in a choke hold and subdued him. The man was actually crying for submission and was eventually arrested, along with his accomplice.

This is the second time that Bastos has used her Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills to stop a robbery. Her skills prove that people that train in this style can definitely use it to defend themselves.
