How Effective is Brazilian JuJitsu for Self-Defense?

Brazilian JuJitsu has recently become one of the world’s leading martial arts. It has become extremely popular due to the growing number of MMA practitioners that use it as their base style. However, many people are still skeptical whether it is an effective form of self-defense. A recent story about MMA fighter Monique Bastos should eliminate their skepticism.

Monique Bastos Demonstrates the Effectiveness of Brazilian JuJitsu

Monique Bastos is a strawweight streetfighter in Brazil that holds a blue belt in Brazilian JuJitsu. Bastos was walking home with a couple of her friends after being attacked by two robbers.

“I was going to my jiu-jitsu training when they arrived on a motorcycle and said they wanted our phones,” Bastos told MMAFighting.com. “I tried to hold my phone, and I realized they were not armed. When they tried to escape, I lifted the rear wheel of the bike and they fell on the ground. The guy who took my phone ran away, but I was able to get the other one.”

One of the robbers took her phone and ran away, but Bastos was able to subdue the other. She put him in a choke hold and subdued him. The man was actually crying for submission and was eventually arrested, along with his accomplice.

This is the second time that Bastos has used her Brazilian JuJitsu skills to stop a robbery. Her skills prove that people that train in this style can definitely use it to defend themselves.

Why is Brazilian JuJitsu So Effective?

There are a number of reasons that Brazilian JuJitsu is such a great style for self-defense. Here are some benefits that martial artists should be aware of.

Control

Brazilian JuJitsu is both a hard and soft style martial art. Most of its techniques include grappling and takedowns, which means that it provides a lot of control over your opponent. This is good for people that want to be able to defend themselves without having to physically incapacitate their opponent with a kick to the side of the head, which can be physically exhausting.

Less Aggressive

Many people have a hard time bringing themselves to physically hurt another human being, even in a situation where it is warranted. Brazilian JuJitsu is a style that allows people to overcome their opponents without using such force or having to physically maim them.

Ground fighting

Most serious fights end up on the ground at some point. While boxing, taekwondo, and many other styles may be great for fighting upright, a Brazilian JuJitsu fighter always has the edge when they are on the ground. This is especially true if they end up in a choke hold, which most boxers have no idea how to counter.
