How to Set Fitness Goals and Achieve Them

  1. Choose a sport or type of exercise¬†that you really enjoy. Let’s face it, if you want to stick to your exercise regimen, then you’re going to have to find a way to have fun while you exercise. Once you’ve found a sport or a particular practice that really speaks to you, then you can set your goals around those activities. In any case, your goals should always be related to what you want to be able to do, not what you want to look like.
  2. Set goals for yourself that are realistic, and always give yourself a timeline. If you’ve never run more than 2-3 miles, then you shouldn’t be expecting yourself to complete a marathon within the next couple of months. Your goals need to be realistic, and they need to be attained within just a couple months. Any longer than that, and you will lose steam, and you will lose track of your progress. You want to come up with at least 3-5 goals, and you should give yourself no longer than 3 months to reach them. Once you have done that, you can set new, more challenging goals for yourself.
  3. Track your progress each week. If you really want to get serious about reaching your goals, then you need to be tracking your progress. Online spreadsheets are one of the best ways to do this, because you can easily turn them into graphs so that you have a strong visual of your progress. There are plenty of apps that you can use on your phone so that you can record your results immediately and compare them to previous weeks in a snap.
  4. Find an exercise buddy to help you along the way. Whether you decide to start mountain biking, running the track, or lifting weights at a gym, like Fitness 19, you’re going to want to have a workout buddy. You and your buddy don’t have to have the same goals, but you do want someone to encourage you along the way. A workout buddy is also great because sometimes feeling obligated to be there for someone else is a lot more motivating than feeling obligated just to yourself.   5. Give yourself incentives to reach your goals. One of the best ways to motivate yourself is to create an incentive. Whether that be a delicious meal at your favorite restaurant, a dream vacation, or simply a night out with your workout buddy, you can come up with an incentive that is appealing to both of you so that you can really put the pressure on one another to reach your goals. The more alluring the incentive, the better.
