What You Should Know About Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, also known as nose job or nose reshaping, is a surgical procedure that reconstructs and corrects the look and functions of your nose. It is one of the most common plastic surgery for women.

According to AAFPRS (American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Inc.), 68% of the facial reconstructions were done in the nose last year. The staggering increase in people wanting to get nose jobs done are blamed on obsession with celebrities.

If you want to get a rhinoplasty done, whether because you want to have the same nose as Jennifer Lawrence’, to improve your looks, or to improve the function of your nose, here are the facts that you need to know about it.

You Need to Have Realistic Expectations

Not all nose jobs are going to be perfect, especially if you didn’t work with your plastic surgeon to plan how you want to reconstruct and correct your nose. According to Colin Pero, MD, a plastic surgeon at the University of Illinois, there are three things that you need to do to get a perfect nose that you like:

  1. Identify which part of your nose has a problem: Is it the bridge? Is it the tip or other parts?
  2. Find the best plastic surgeon in your area: Do your research. Talk to people in your location who have had successful Rhinoplasty done or search for the plastic surgeon’s reviews online.
  3. Schedule a consultation: If you have done a few surgeons, schedule a consultation before getting a nose job. It’s best to learn about their methods first, the cost and other information before you get in action. After that, choose the plastic surgeon that you think is the best.

It takes Time to Recover

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure. That means you can go home after the surgery is done. But expect to have swelling in the nose, bruises and discomfort.

For perfectly healthy people who had their nose reshaped, it typically takes only a week to recover. However, some people will take a few more weeks or even months to fully recover. It depends on the person’s anatomy, the type of nose job performed, skin thickness and if other nose surgery was done previously. So if you are planning on getting a nose job done, you also need to plan when the procedure should be done. You may need to take a break from work, school and other responsibilities for a while.

How much does Rhinoplasty cost?

The cost of Rhinoplasty can range from $3,000 to $15,000. This depends on the surgeon’s level of expertise and experience, the location where the surgery is done, the type of Rhinoplasty to be done and other factors.

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of cosmetic surgeries or complications that caused you to get a nose job done.

What happens if I don’t like my new nose?

If you don’t think your Rhinoplasty is not a success because it worsened the look and/or function of your nose, you can opt for a revision surgery. But, know that revision surgery can be less effective than the first surgery. It is also more costly. So before you get your nose revised, think first. Do you not like it for aesthetic reasons? Ask other people if they think it looks good or not. If you are the only one who thinks the nose job is not successful, you may think twice about getting the revision surgery. If for some reason your breathing is affected, it may be best to go back to the surgeon and know your options.

Getting a Rhinoplasty is not something that should be done hastily. If you are sure that you need for whatever reason, make sure you have enough money to fund the procedure and have the best surgeon to perform it.
